Department of Fisheries Resources Management
The major objective of the Department of the Fisheries Resources Management is to equip the students with fisheries resources, as well as to provide advance knowledge, modern approaches and analytical techniques of fisheries and environmental management for sustainable development of freshwater, brackish and marine sectors.
The Department of Fisheries Resources Management, offers courses in undergraduate level under the Faculty of Fisheries, has the mandate to produce qualified manpower in the fisheries sector with proper training in the areas of inland, coastal and marine fisheries for its sustainable management and development. The course curriculum of the Department of Fisheries Resources Management has been prepared with a view to making the programmes relevant to the needs and development of larger society. In particular, the courses will enable graduates from such an academic Department to be innovative and more relevant in terms of job creation, with more impact on local, national and global development.
The strongholds of the Department curricula are entrepreneurship skill, environmental management and conservation of renewable natural resources for sustainable development and benefit of mankind. Students are practically exposed to specialized areas of fisheries management in order to make them self-reliant at the completion of their studies. The students will occupy key positions in different walks of life where they make significant contributions to national and international Fisheries development.
The conservation of the world’s natural resources constitutes one of the major challenges facing mankind today. Production of fish and management of fisheries resources are of immense importance in the sustainable development of renewable natural resources. The courses offered by the Department of Fisheries Resources Management will therefore represent a giant stride towards meeting challenges of ensuring continuous, sustainable rational exploitation of valuable fisheries resources and biodiversity for food security and livelihoods. It is envisioned in the underlying philosophy of the programmes which are based on developing graduates with sound knowledge and skills for managing and conserving renewable natural resources for socio-economic enhancement of our environment.

The department offers courses like Fisheries Resources, Freshwater Ecology, Water Quality Management, Aquatic Soil Science, Biological Limnology, Fish Population Dynamics, Inland Fisheries Management, Climate Change & Fisheries, Aquatic Biodiversity & Conservation, Fisheries Research & Planning and Fish Curation. It also provides Master of Science degree from 2017.
