Dr Helena Khatoon graduated in Bachelor of Science in Fisheries from Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). From the same Institute, in 2002 she pursued her Master of Science in Fisheries Management. She was a PhD student at Faculty Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) from 2002 to 2006, with the prestigious Scholarship from the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World. She graduated in 2007, and by that time she has demonstrated excellent performance in research and innovation. With an additional five years (from 2007 to 2011) as a postdoctoral fellow at Laboratory of Marine Science and Aquaculture, Institute of Bioscience, UPM, Dr Helena contributed significant new knowledge to science through her publication in prestigious international journals, and innovations with commercial potentials.

With her excellent academic background, University Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Malaysia appointed her as a Senior Lecturer from January 2012 to June 2018. After successful completion of his tenure at University Malaysia Terengganu, she joined as an Assistant Professor at Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries, Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Bangladesh.

Dr Helena’s research interests include the use of microalgae as bioremediator and feed for aquaculture, use of photobioreactors for mass culture of microalgae, and the extraction of lipid from the microalgae, and biofloc technology. She has received several research grants from the ministry of science and technology, Malaysia for her project. Recently she is serving as a co-researcher in the prestigious project entitled “Isolation, identification, and optimization of freshwater and marine indigenous microalgae from Peninsular Malaysia” funded by Malaysia-Japan Collaborative Research SATREPS (JICA-JST) on COSMOS 2016-2020, Japan. She has also supervised the number of postgraduate students.

To date, she has published more than 60 publications in highly reputable international journals and proceedings. Products from her research have been recognized and achieved 17 gold medals and 6 silver medals from various national and international exhibition competitions. Dr. Helena has patented four research products related to the aquaculture industry. To date, she has an overall of 2550 citations and “h index” of 24, in Google Scholar Citations which is a great accomplishment as a young scientist.
