The Poultry Research and Training Centre (PRTC) has been established on 11 March 2008 (Through signing a Bilateral Agreement and an MOU between “Enhance the Capacity of Department of Livestock Services Project”, DLS and CVASU) with the financial support from Danida and jointly executed by the Chattogram(previously Chittagong) Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) and the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) with support and advices provided by the Agricultural Sector Programme Support (ASPS) II of Danida. PRTC the autonomous institution, situated at the CVASU main campus, has been established within the legal framework of the university Act 30 (July 16,Sunday, 2006) under the Statutes entered into force on 24 June 2007 as per decision no. 3.3 of second meeting of the Syndicate and the office order vide no. CVASU/reg/PRTC-39/2008/35 (8), Dated: 09/01/2008.

Its aim and objective are to become a leading centre in Bangladesh for capacity building in the livestock sector through

-    Short term training

-    Enhancing research

-    Enhancing communication and collaboration between private and public stakeholders

PRTC is responsible to a Board of Governors regarding policies, strategic planning, annual work plans and budgeting. The board is constituted of 15 members with members from CVASU, research institutions, extension agencies, poultry industries and NGOs. Vice-Chancellor, CVASU is the chairman and Director, PRTC is the member-secretary of the board. PRTC Board meeting has been being organized in every six months.

PRTC laboratory started its journey on 10 January 2012 providing laboratory services to different stakeholder from Animal Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL) and Feed Analysis & Food Safety (FA&FS) Laboratory.

PRTC Vision:

    Providing better animal health services for poultry and livestock to the ultimate target group, the poor farmers

    Facilitating enhanced communication and collaboration between private and public stakeholders in the poultry and livestock sector

    Extending better national prevention and control services for combating Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and other contagious poultry diseases

    Providing better management and production services in the poultry and livestock sector

PRTC Mission:

    To make relevant cost-effective short-term training packages available for all stakeholders in the poultry and livestock development sectors

    To assure that all training is based on the newest available knowledge and research results

    To reinforce institutional links between research, higher education, the public and private sectors

PRTC operates through two key divisions:

1.    Animal Disease Diagnosis Laboratory (ADDL) – specializing in disease diagnosis and research.

2.    Feed Analysis and Food Safety Laboratory (FAFSL) – focusing on livestock feed analysis and contaminant detection to meet safety standards.

Our core mission is trade facilitation—supporting safe and efficient import processes through high-quality laboratory testing.

In addition, we conduct advanced research, offer diagnostic services, and organize training programs for field veterinarians, farmers, postgraduate students, and other stakeholders in the livestock sector.

PRTC’s has great role in agriculture and trade. PRTC ensures the safety and quality of livestock and human food by testing nutritional content and hazardous substances, supporting customs clearance and trade compliance. The significant portion of the livestock feed ingredients tested at PRTC—such as soybean meal, corn, and microbial protein—are imported from the United States.

Additionally, we support sector growth through farmer training and capacity-building for veterinarians.

Dr. A. K. M. Humayun Kober
Professor and Director
Poultry Research and Training Centre (PRTC)

Greetings from Poultry Research and Training Centre (PRTC)!

PRTC, the first Institute of Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), started its journey in 2008. The vision of PRTC is better-institutionalized supports in research, training and laboratory services for safer and increased livestock products in Bangladesh. Focused activities to achieve the objectives include conducting of quality research in collaboration with internal and external partners; need-based training and communication of new knowledge to the ultimate users; introducing quality laboratory testing services to support animal disease diagnosis and production of safer foods of animal origin, and facilitating hands-on learning and research for undergraduate and graduate students.

Supported from DANIDA (Danish International Development Agency), PRTC was initially involved in training. Later, two laboratories namely, Animal Disease Diagnosis Laboratory (ADDL) and Feed Analysis & Food Safety Laboratory (FAFSL) were established at PRTC with the help of a DANIDA-supported programme. Support from the Emerging Pandemic Threat Plus (EPT+) Programme through Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations was also helpful for PRTC to strengthen its laboratory capacity.  Due to cater the emerging needs in different livestock-related fields of the country, the services of PRTC are now being provided under the authorization of four specialized laboratories: Animal Disease & Diagnostic Laboratory, Food Safety Laboratory, Feed Analysis Laboratory and Zoonotic Disease Research Laboratory; the latter two are still in a phase of development with the envision of having the necessary equipment, such as LSMS/MS, MALDI-TOF and NGS in the near future. Trained and dedicated human resources committed to their respective duties are behind the success of PRTC.

The facilities of PRTC are commonly used by students and faculty members of CVASU. PRTC is currently involved with the laboratory activities of several nationally important projects, such as One Health Poultry Hub (funded by UKRI, UK), Active Surveillance of HPAI in Bangladesh – Live Bird Markets Sink Surveillance (funded by FAO), Increasing livestock production in the Hills through better husbandry, health service and improving market access through value and supply chain management (funded by KGF, Bangladesh), and some others. It has been selected as one of the three sentinel laboratories in the animal health sector in the country for developing National AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance) Surveillance under the Fleming Fund Country Grant for Bangladesh (UK-funded).

Ensuring quality in research, training and laboratory services is prime importance for PRTC. All its activities are regulated and governed by the decision of the Board of Governors (BOG) comprised of members from the University, poultry industry, and representations from NGOs, Department of Livestock Services and Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute, formed under the statute for PRTC of CVASU. The Vice-Chancellor of CVASU is the Chairman of the BOG. PRTC has already built its reputation by providing quality laboratory services and training, but is still in the pursuit of having more and more state-of-the-art facilities to meet the future challenges in food safety and emerging zoonotic diseases. Due to its commitment, it remains open even in COVID-19 pandemic time to provide its laboratory services to support the livestock sector in the country. It also supported the COVID-19 laboratory set at CVASU financially and technically to provide COVID-19 diagnostic services. This promising institute needs supports from all concerned to be developed further to achieve the goal for which it was supported from DANIDA.

From 2008 to 2024, PRTC conducted over 79,000 lab tests—mainly for trade facilitation—including 46,000 antimicrobial residue tests, 23,000 livestock feed analyses, and 10,000 porcine/bovine screenings. Simultaneously, it advanced Bangladesh’s agriculture sector through extensive capacity-building training for farmers, veterinarians, and traders. This dual role underscores PRTC’s impact on public health and agricultural development.
