Department of Dairy and Poultry Sciences

The Department of Dairy and Poultry Sciences (DDPS) was established in 1996 with an aim to provide teaching, quality research and extension activities, under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of CVASU.  Two different disciplines, Dairy Science and Poultry Science have been working together since its inception for offering variety of courses to the students of undergrad and postgrad level of this university. The courses are designed for giving special focus on production and improvement of livestock in addition to quality assurance of dairy and poultry products in order to fulfill consumer demand.  It is considered as one of the most promising and a leading department for the production subjects to provide quality education and cutting-edge research program for the students of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Food Science. The courses of this department are specially designed for the students to provide them opportunity about dairy, poultry, pet and small ruminant production, beef cattle, and draft power production, manufacturing processes of dairy   and poultry food products, quality   control of meat, egg, milk and other food products, improved farming mechanism and management practices, research focusing on dairy and poultry animals, marketing of products  at the both undergrad and postgrad  level. The understanding of dairy and poultry farm management, their modern production strategies, enhancing milk, meat and egg production , rendering   cutting-edge research  program, consulting services  are the  main   focuses of this department. The teaching strategy focuses on both theoretical and practical approaches via delivering lecture in the classes and hands on practices in the farm or lab, demonstration of farm animals and their handling and restraining mechanism under this program. Apart from teaching and research, faculties of this department also engaged with public and extension services and other extracurricular activities. The department is also providing technical and consultancy services to different national and private organizations, farmers and stakeholders, who are working in the field of dairy and poultry production, through training programs and direct consultancy. We are currently allocating total course credits 21 of  900 marks   for the students of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and only 7 credits of 350 marks offering  to  the   students of Faculty of Food Science and Technology from this department at the  undergrad level.  This department also offers Masters and PhD in Dairy & Poultry Sciences, respectively, where the students have an opportunity of uplifting their knowledge, skill, innovative idea, in the discipline of Dairy, Poultry, and other relevant field of livestock and agricultural research.  For the master in Poultry Science, we have allocated 1600 marks of credit 40, similar marks and credit are also assigned for conducting master degree in Dairy Science for the postgrad student. The PhD program is also offering from this department in either discipline i.e Dairy or Poultry Sciences separately, and this program is designed for three years.   The department is located on the 1st floor of Yusuf Chowdhury Bhaban, where we have well-equipped laboratory facilities for conducting research and other academic activities for the students and faculties.

Vision:

To be nationally and internationally recognized as an excellent center for  teaching, research, education, extension and building up skilled manpower in the field of dairy and poultry sciences

Mission:

To discover, translate and implement new knowledge, innovation and technology in the field of dairy and poultry sciences for a sustainable and competitive livestock sector through collaboration with industry and other stakeholders to improve human health.

Goal of the Department

To meet the huge animal proteins (milk, meat and egg) demand for the consumer world.

Developing improved technology in the field of dairy and poultry sciences and   disseminating  these innovative technologies to the grass-root level

Core values /strategies:
