Preface

The Department of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology (DPBP) started its journey from the former Chittagong Government Veterinary College (CGVC) in 1995. In 2006, the CGVC had upgraded into Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU). Then the department of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology was brought under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM). The department offers diverse courses at undergraduate in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Food Science and Technology and Faculty of Fisheries and post-graduate levels (MS and PhD) as well. Apart from teaching activities, faculties of this department also engaged with research, public and extension services and other extracurricular activities. A number of projects are operating under this department. The researcher published a significant number of articles in various peer reviewed journals both nationally and internationally. The department located at the 2nd floor of Old academic building of CVASU.

Introduction

The Department of Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology is one of the most dynamic and multidisciplinary departments of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU). It contributes at three faculties of the University namely Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FVM), Faculty of Food Science and Technology (FFST) and Faculty of Fisheries (FOF) in undergraduate level. Under the FVM it offers seven (7) subjects within four (4) major disciplines, namely, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology and under the FFST and FOF it offers Biochemistry and partly Human Biology in FFST. In addition, animal welfare studies have recently been receiving attention within the department. This program is likely to attract students and faculty interest as well as potential supports from the OIE. Therefore, Animal Welfare and Veterinary Ethics have been given a separate identity within the department in its recent updated veterinary curricula. Total credit and contact hour for this department are 25 and 93 hours respectively. The courses in this department are designed to start with the 1st year 1st semester (101) and continue up to the 4th year 2nd semester (402). Besides that, this department also offers MS in Physiology, MS in Pharmacology, MS in Biochemistry and also PhD in Physiology, PhD Biochemistry and PhD in Pharmacology in postgraduate study. Apart from teaching, faculties of this department also engaged with research, public and extension services and other extracurricular activities. The aims of the department are to provide a quality education, a need- based research program and a commitment to modern public service.

Vision

  • To be the best multidisciplinary department in this university in both academic and research fields by having the best teaching, research and outreach program(s).

Mission

  •  To equip students with the preclinical, para-clinical knowledge of Physiology, Biochemistry and Animal welfare  and to have para-clinical and clinical experiences in Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • To offer research based higher studies
  • To promote public services through extension works.
